Where This Comes From
Indian Railways publishes a train's rake — every reserved coach, its class, and often its position from the engine — as part of the reservation chart. That data only exists while the chart is up, so it cannot be looked up for an arbitrary train on an arbitrary day. We capture it whenever we see a prepared chart and keep the most recent sighting, dated.
That is also why this is not a guess. Plenty of sites infer coach order from the coach letter — B before A, S before B — which is a convention, not a rule, and it is wrong often enough to put you at the wrong end of a long platform.
Two Kinds of Answer
Position from the engine is optional in the chart data. Some trains publish it, many do not, so you will get one of two answers and the page always says which:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Positioned rake | Coaches laid out in order from the engine, with gaps marked. Use it to judge roughly where on the platform to wait. |
| Composition only | Every coach and its class, but no order. Useful for knowing what the train carries and which classes are available — not for where to stand. |
We never invent an order. A made-up sequence looks exactly as authoritative as a real one, which is what makes it worth refusing.
Why Positions Are Missing From the Sequence
A reservation chart only covers reserved accommodation. Everything else in the rake is absent from it, which is why a train numbered 1 to 20 may list only 2 to 12 and 14 to 20. The missing positions are almost always:
- Power / luggage vans (SLR, EOG) — usually one at each end, which is why position 1 is so often blank.
- Unreserved and general coaches (GS) — no chart, no berths to allot.
- Pantry car (PC) — typically mid-rake, which is why a gap often appears in the middle.
We show those gaps rather than closing them up, because closing them would shift every coach after the gap and quietly make the whole sequence wrong.
Class Codes and Coach Letters
| Code | Class | Usual coach letter |
|---|---|---|
| 1A | First AC | H |
| 2A | AC 2 Tier | A |
| 3A | AC 3 Tier | B |
| 3E | AC 3 Tier Economy | M |
| CC | AC Chair Car | C |
| EC | Executive Chair Car | E |
| EA / EV | Anubhuti / Vistadome | EA, EV |
| SL | Sleeper | S |
| FC | First Class (non-AC) | F |
| 2S | Second Sitting | D |
The letter usually follows the class, but the class code is what the railway actually publishes — that is what we show, rather than inferring class from the name.
