How This Search Works

A train counts as direct between two stations if it calls at your origin and then calls at your destination later in the same run. It does not need to start or finish at either one — most useful trains on any route are passing through. That is why the times shown here are measured at your stations: the departure is when the train leaves your platform, and the arrival is when it reaches your destination, not the train's own terminus.

Journey times account for services that run past midnight, so a train leaving at 23:10 and arriving at 06:40 the next morning is shown as 7h 30m rather than a negative number. Trains that arrive on a later day are flagged in the results.

One Thing That Catches People Out

Booking windows are counted from the train's originating station, never from where you board. General booking opens 60 days before the train starts its run, and Tatkal one day before that. On a pass-through service the train may leave its origin a day or more before it reaches you — so counting back from your own boarding date puts you a day late. The Tatkal time calculator handles that correction for you.

Reading the Results

Every column is measured for the two stations you asked about, not for the train's own route. A train that runs Delhi to Trivandrum shows you the Vadodara–Surat leg if that is what you searched.

ColumnWhat it means
TrainThe five-digit number. It is the only reliable way to identify a service — names repeat, numbers do not. Click through for the full timetable.
NameThe service name, with the running days underneath. Daily means all seven days; otherwise the specific days are listed.
DepartsDeparture from your origin station, in 24-hour time.
ArrivesArrival at your destination. A +1d badge means it arrives the next calendar day, +2d the day after that.
DurationScheduled time between those two points, counted correctly across midnight.
DistanceRail kilometres between your two stations — often much longer than the road distance, because track follows the alignment, not the crow.

Running days always refer to the day the train leaves its originating station. A train shown as running on Monday may well reach a mid-route station on Tuesday.

Choosing Between Trains on the Same Route

On a busy corridor the same journey may be offered by thirty or more trains, and the fastest is not automatically the best one to book. A few things worth weighing:

  • Arrival time beats journey time. A train that takes an hour longer but lands at 07:00 instead of 04:00 is usually the better ticket. Look at the arrival column first.
  • An overnight train saves a hotel night. On journeys over roughly eight hours, a departure between 20:00 and 23:00 with a morning arrival buys you a night's accommodation and a full day at the other end.
  • Fewer halts usually means a better night's sleep as much as a faster run — Rajdhani and Duronto services stop at a handful of stations, ordinary expresses at dozens.
  • Check the running days before the timing. A perfect 22:10 departure is no use if it runs on Tuesdays and you travel on Thursdays.
  • Mid-route boarding means a mid-route quota. Trains allot only a share of berths to intermediate stations, so a train that starts where you board often has better availability than one passing through, even when both look equally convenient here.

Once you have a shortlist, the schedule checker gives you the full station-by-station timetable for any one of them, and our route guides cover 5 popular station pairs in full.

Train Categories, and What They Tell You

The name carries real information about speed, stops, classes and fare. These are the categories you will see most often in the results.

CategoryWhat to expect
Vande BharatDay train, chair car only (CC and EC). Fastest on most routes it runs, few halts, catering included. No sleeping berths.
RajdhaniFully air-conditioned overnight train to or from Delhi. 1A, 2A and 3A, meals included in the fare, very few halts.
ShatabdiDay return service, chair car only, meals included. Leaves in the morning and comes back the same evening.
DurontoLong-distance non-stop-in-spirit service — technically halts, but very few, and priced close to Rajdhani.
TejasPremium service, chair car or sleeper depending on the route, with a higher standard of on-board service.
HumsafarFully 3AC. One class only, so availability is simple but there is no cheaper option on the same train.
Garib RathAir-conditioned at a deliberately low fare. Three-tier layout with side berths, no linen included by default.
AntyodayaFully unreserved, long distance, no booking required and no reserved berth either.
Jan ShatabdiDay train with a mix of AC chair car and second sitting — the affordable Shatabdi.
IntercityShort to medium daytime hop between two cities, usually sitting classes.
SuperfastAverages 55 km/h or more end to end, which is what earns the label and the superfast surcharge on the fare.
Mail / ExpressThe backbone of the network. Full range of classes, more halts, lower fare than the premium categories.
PassengerStops almost everywhere, largely unreserved. Fine for short hops, slow over distance.
SpecialRun for a limited period — festivals, holidays, extra demand. Often numbered in the 0 series and withdrawn without notice.

When Booking Opens for Your Route

Every window below is counted from the moment the train leaves its originating station — never from your own boarding station, and never from your arrival.

WindowOpensCounted from
General booking60 days ahead, 8:00 AMDeparture from origin
Tatkal, AC classes1 day ahead, 10:00 AMDeparture from origin
Tatkal, non-AC classes1 day ahead, 11:00 AMDeparture from origin
Chart preparation9 to 18 hours beforeDeparture from origin

This is where mid-route travellers lose seats. If a train starts on the 9th and reaches your station on the 10th, its Tatkal window opened on the 8th — a day earlier than counting back from your own travel date would suggest. Work out the exact moment with the Tatkal time calculator, and the charting time with the chart preparation calculator.

If Your Train Isn't Listed

Four reasons a service you expected might not appear:

  • It isn't direct. This search only lists trains that call at both of your stations on the same run. Journeys with a change are not shown — try searching in two legs through a major junction on the way.
  • The station code is different from the one you expected. Big cities have several stations, and they are not interchangeable: Mumbai alone has CSMT, BCT, MMCT, LTT, BDTS and DR. Pick from the suggestions rather than typing a code from memory.
  • It is a new or special train we have not picked up yet. Specials in particular appear and vanish at short notice.
  • We hold its route but not its timings at both of your stations. Those trains are still listed — they just sort below the timed ones and show a dash instead of a time.

For scale, this search currently covers 6,306 trains calling at 4,631 stations, across 136,670 individual station stops.

Station Codes Worth Knowing

You can search by name, but codes are faster and unambiguous — and essential in cities with more than one terminus.

Booking to the wrong terminus is a common and expensive mistake — CSMT and MMCT are seven kilometres and a different railway zone apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about searching trains between two stations

Type the station name or code into the From and To boxes and pick from the suggestions, then press Find Trains. We list every direct train we hold a schedule for, with its departure time at your origin, its arrival time at your destination, the journey time and the running days. Only direct trains are shown — nothing here requires a change.

Yes, and that is the point. A train counts as direct if it calls at your origin and then calls at your destination later in its run, whether or not either station is its terminus. The departure time shown is the time at your station, not at the train's originating station.

A train appears without a time when we hold its route but not its timings at both of your stations. It is still a real service on that route, so we list it rather than hide it, and it sorts below the trains we can time. Open the train's own page or the schedule checker for its full timetable.

They are the scheduled times published by Indian Railways, measured from departure at your origin to arrival at your destination, and they account for journeys that run past midnight into the next day. They are not live running times — a delayed train will not match them.

General booking opens 60 days before the train departs its originating station, and Tatkal one day before that departure — 10:00 AM for AC classes, 11:00 AM for non-AC. Both are counted from the train's origin, which on a pass-through service is not your boarding station, so count carefully.

Yes, once the reservation chart is prepared. The vacant seat finder reads the prepared chart and shows which berths actually fell empty, coach by coach, for a given train, date and boarding station.

It means the train reaches your destination on the next calendar day, and +2d the day after that. Long-distance Indian Railways journeys routinely cross midnight, so the arrival date on your ticket may not be the date you boarded. Always check the day as well as the time before arranging a pickup at the other end.

Not directly — this search lists only trains that call at both of your stations on the same run. If nothing comes up, search the journey in two legs through a major junction on the way: origin to junction, then junction to destination. Junctions with high train counts appear near the top of the station suggestions.

Whichever one your train actually uses — they are not interchangeable. Mumbai alone has CSMT, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak, Bandra Terminus and Dadar, and Delhi has New Delhi, Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin. They can be an hour apart in city traffic, so pick from the suggestions rather than assuming the main terminus.

Not usually. Arrival time matters more than journey time — a train that takes an hour longer but arrives at 07:00 rather than 04:00 is generally the better ticket. On journeys over about eight hours an overnight departure also saves a hotel night and gives you a full day at the other end. And check the running days before the timing: a perfect departure is no use on a day the train does not run.

Track follows the alignment that was built, not the shortest line between two points, so rail distances are often noticeably longer than the road equivalent. The distance shown here is the rail distance between your two stations, which is what fares and superfast surcharges are calculated on.
