A Double Decker Express carries passengers on two levels within a single coach, which raises capacity by roughly half without lengthening the train or adding paths to an already crowded timetable. On the corridors where these run, that extra capacity is the entire reason the service exists.

The modern air-conditioned double-decker was introduced in 2011, and this page lists every such service in the reservation system. Note that these trains are recorded under at least six different spellings in the booking system, from "DOUBLE DECKER" to "DOUBLDECKER" to "DBLDECK", which is why lists elsewhere are so often incomplete.

On speed: the figures in the table are average speeds across the whole journey, halts included, worked out from the published schedule. Cleared for up to 130 km/h; the taller profile restricts these trains to routes with adequate overhead clearance.

Capacity without extra paths

On a busy corridor the scarce resource is not coaches but paths: the slots in the timetable a train can occupy. Once a route is saturated, running more services is not possible, and lengthening trains runs into platform limits. Stacking a second deck inside the existing loading gauge is one of the few ways left to move more people.

A double-decker coach seats roughly 120 passengers against about 78 in a conventional AC chair car. Across a full rake that is several hundred additional seats a day on a route where no additional train could be run at all.

Design constraints

Fitting two decks under Indian overhead electrification is tight, and it shapes everything about these coaches. Ceilings are lower than in single-deck stock, luggage space is more limited, and the trains can only be routed where clearances allow, which is why the network of double-decker services is geographically restricted rather than nationwide.

The coaches are air-conditioned chair car throughout, built at Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala. These are day trains on medium-distance routes; there is no sleeping accommodation.

Related services

The Uday Express is a distinct category that also uses double-decker stock, designed for overnight travel on busy short routes. Uday services are listed on the special train types page rather than here, since they form their own category with their own operating pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Double Decker Express trains.

The Double Decker Express is cleared for up to 130 km/h; the taller profile restricts these trains to routes with adequate overhead clearance. That is the maximum permitted speed, not what a journey averages: across the 14 services listed above the end-to-end average is 61 km/h, or 64 km/h with halts excluded. Stopping costs only 3 km/h — the rest of the gap is track, since a sanctioned speed applies only to the sections cleared for it.

Yes. The modern double-decker services are air-conditioned chair car throughout, on both decks.

A double-decker coach seats around 120 against about 78 in a conventional AC chair car, so a full rake carries roughly half as many passengers again.

The upper deck gives better views and feels less enclosed; the lower deck is easier to reach with luggage and involves no stairs. Seat numbering identifies the deck, so you can choose at booking.

The taller coaches need adequate overhead clearance, which not every electrified route has. Services are limited to corridors where the clearances permit and where demand justifies the extra capacity.
