Not every named category on Indian Railways runs to dozens of services. Some were created for a single specific purpose and never needed to grow; others were experiments that found a niche and stayed in it. This page collects six such categories, each too small for a page of its own but each genuinely distinct in what it does and who it is for.

They are grouped below by category, with a short explanation of what each one is and the full list of services running under it. Between them they account for a small number of trains and a disproportionate share of the interesting ideas on the network.

Gatimaan Express (2)

India's first 160 km/h train, introduced in April 2016 between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Agra Cantt and later extended towards Gwalior and Jhansi. It held the title of the country's fastest train until the Vande Bharat fleet arrived, and it remains the only service to have been designed around a single upgraded high-speed section rather than a general route. It is also the service that introduced onboard train hostesses.

Sampark Kranti Express (9)

Introduced from 2004 with one guiding rule: every state gets a fast, direct link to Delhi with the minimum number of halts. Sampark means connection and kranti means revolution, and the naming was literal, with each service identified by the state it serves. The lean stopping pattern is what distinguishes these from an ordinary superfast on the same route.

Antyodaya Express (3)

Fully unreserved long-distance superfast services, aimed at travellers who cannot plan far enough ahead to reserve. Every coach is general seating, but the rakes are modern LHB stock fitted with mobile charging points, water purifiers, bio-toilets and cushioned luggage racks, which is a considerable step up from the unreserved coaches attached to conventional trains.

Uday Express (5)

Utkrisht Double-Decker Air-conditioned Yatri Express: overnight double-decker air-conditioned chair car services on short, heavily used corridors. The reasoning is that on a route of six or seven hours overnight, a reclining seat is sufficient and a double-decker layout roughly doubles the capacity of a scarce timetable path.

Yuva Express (3)

Introduced in 2009 for young and unemployed travellers, with a majority of seats set aside at concessional fares for passengers aged between 15 and 45 who are seeking work. Accommodation is AC Chair Car, and the services run on the busiest long-distance corridors out of Delhi.

Suvidha Express (3)

Premium special services with fully dynamic fares, introduced to give travellers a legitimate route to a last-minute confirmed berth and to undercut the touting that surrounds Tatkal quotas. Fares rise steeply as the train fills and refund rules are more restrictive than on ordinary services, so these are worth booking only when the alternative is no ticket at all.

Why some rows show a dash. Distance and average speed are read from each train’s cached schedule. 6 of these 25 trains have not had their full schedule captured yet, so those figures are left blank rather than estimated. They fill in automatically as the schedules refresh.

On speed: the figures in the table are average speeds across the whole journey, halts included, worked out from the published schedule. Speeds vary widely across these categories, from the 160 km/h Gatimaan to conventional 110 km/h services.

Why these categories stayed small

A category grows when the pattern it introduces turns out to apply widely. The Humsafar became large because affordable air-conditioned overnight capacity was needed everywhere. The categories on this page were each built for a narrower problem: one upgraded high-speed section, one train per state to the capital, one fare mechanism for last-minute travel.

Being small does not make them unimportant. Gatimaan proved that 160 km/h was operable in India years before the Vande Bharat fleet, and Antyodaya is one of the few serious attempts to improve the experience of unreserved travel rather than simply price it low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Special Train Types trains.

The Gatimaan Express, cleared for 160 km/h on the upgraded Delhi to Agra section. It was the fastest train in India until the Vande Bharat fleet was introduced.

No. Antyodaya services are fully unreserved, so a general second-class ticket is sufficient. That is the point of the category, though it also means a seat is not guaranteed.

Utkrisht Double-Decker Air-conditioned Yatri Express. They are overnight double-decker air-conditioned chair car services on busy short-haul routes.

Suvidha services use fully dynamic pricing that rises as the train fills. They exist to offer a legitimate last-minute alternative to Tatkal, so the fare late in the booking cycle is deliberately steep.
