The Tejas Express matters more for what it introduced than for how many services run. When the first one left Mumbai for Karmali in May 2017, it brought a set of features to Indian Railways that had never appeared on a domestic train: automatic sliding doors, an entertainment screen at every seat, onboard wi-fi, bio-vacuum toilets and tea and coffee vending.
Tejas means radiance. This page lists the Tejas Express services proper. It does not list the Tejas Rajdhani trains, which are Rajdhani services running Tejas-type coaches and are frequently confused with these; those appear on the Rajdhani page.

On speed: the figures in the table are average speeds across the whole journey, halts included, worked out from the published schedule. Designed for up to 160 km/h; like every fast train in India, held to 130 km/h where the track requires it.
A demonstration that became a standard
The Tejas was conceived as a showcase for what an Indian train could be, and much of what it demonstrated has since become normal. Automatic doors, sealed gangways, bio-vacuum toilets and at-seat information systems all appear on the Vande Bharat fleet, and Tejas-type coaches were fitted to Rajdhani services from 2019 onwards.
That is why the fleet itself is small. The category was never meant to be large; it was meant to prove a specification, and the specification won.
The first privately operated trains
Two Tejas services carry a second distinction. The Lucknow to New Delhi Tejas, introduced in October 2019, and the Ahmedabad to Mumbai service that followed were operated by IRCTC rather than by Indian Railways directly, making them the first trains in independent India run by an operator other than the railway itself.
That arrangement brought commercial practices unfamiliar on the network, including compensation paid to passengers for significant delays, and fares set by the operator rather than by a national tariff.
What to expect on board
Accommodation is AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car. These are day trains on medium-distance corridors, and the distances in the table below reflect that. Catering arrangements vary between services, being included on some and optional on others, so check when booking rather than assuming either way.
